Each year, there is a national literary/art contest held among the Starlings. In 2007, Santee received six awards spanning all three age divisions in which there was a team. In 2008, the club got two 1st place awards, literary and art, with 5 total awards. In 2009 we had another great turnout with two first place awards in art and 7 total awards. Increase your knowledge of the game by learning some key terms:

Ace: A serve that results directly in a point, usually when the ball hits the floor untouched on the receiving team's side of the court.

Dig: Passing a spiked or rapidly hit ball. Slang for the art of retrieving an attacked ball close to the floor.

Dink: A one-handed, soft hit into the opponent's court using the fingertips.

Kill: An attack that results directly in a point or sideout.

Side Out: Change of service when a serving team has failed to score a point.
